Toshiya Nishi, Second Violin

Toshiya was born in Tokyo, Japan. He started violin lessons at the age of 15. He first studied the basics of violin with his father and younger sister for six months. Then, during his high school years, he studied with Teresa Merchant of Palo Alto for three and a half years. While attending Santa Clara University, he studied with Gideon Grau, Laura Caballero (violin) and Dale King (chamber music). Toshiya graduated from Santa Clara with a BA in music in June 1994. Since graduation, Toshiya has studied with Elise Christianson of San Francisco and Dale King of San Jose. Toshiya has played with various orchestras and ensembles around the Bay Area including Santa Cruz County Symphony, Fremont Symphony, Bay Shore Lyric Opera, Monterey County Symphony, Modesto Symphony, Napa Valley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, and West Bay Opera, as well as appearing with Van Cliburn competition winner Jon Nakamatsu in a chamber music concert in 1993. He also teaches privately.
