Susan C. Brown, Violin

Susan C. Brown, violin/viola, a New York City native, has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and concertmaster. She is Director of Strings at Cabrillo College and has served as Director of Chamber ensembles at UC Santa Cruz and the City University of New York. Violinist and violist with the African American Composer Initiative(AACI), Picasso Ensemble (co-founder), Ensemble Monterey, Santa Cruz Chamber Players, she has performed as concertmaster of the California Parallèle Ensemble and Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra, violinist with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the New York Pro Arte, and the Philadelphia Composers Forum.

Brown is a multiple award recipient of ASCAP for her compositions. Her scales and method books for strings (Tempo Press and Alfred Publishing) are used throughout the country. She is concertmaster and soloist on Lou Harrison’s opera Rapunzel (New Albion), La Musique de Germaine Tailleferre (Helicon), Moment to Moment, Roy Hargrove with Strings (Verve), and featured in the Mode CD (2001): Dancing with Henry: New Discoveries in the Music of Henry Cowell. She is featured in the (Cambria CD) (2018): Where Freedom Rings with the Picasso Ensemble and (Cambria CD) (2018): The Angels Bowed Down. As a violinist and violist, Brown has recently premiered chamber music by composers D’Arcy Reynolds, Shinji Eshima, Valerie Capers, Karen Linford, Joshua McGhee and John Robinson.
